While Win11 24H2 Remains In Preview
If you’ve been holding off on Windows Updates, or simply haven’t rebooted in over a year then this news will impact you. The majority of vulnerability scanners have flagged Win11 22H2 as a critical risk for a while now and Microsoft will now do something about it. On October 8th Microsoft will make Windows 11 23H2 mandatory, though how they are going to managed that is somewhat unclear. If a machine hasn’t updated since October of last year, at the earliest, unless they force a reboot the system will remain as it is. There have been very few instances of forced reboots so we aren’t likely to see that.
The affected systems may well have their ability to postpone updates suspended for a bit, but you can still block them by changing to a metered connection. Some users do choose to open Settings > Change PC settings > Choose Network > Connections and then setting that network connection as a metered connection. That would also probably prevent the update.
The decision, if you haven’t guessed by now, “follows the machine learning-based (ML) training we have utilized so far.” That may well explain the nonsensical decision. Regardless, you should update.
