Almost, But not Quite, Entirely Unlike Intel
Intel’s Core Ultra 5 245K and Core Ultra 9 285K were a huge disappointment for gamers, their performance for that task was no improvement over previous generations. If you want a solid workstation that doesn’t suck up huge amounts of power they are a great choice, but for you dear reader, gaming is where it is at. AMD have answered the call with the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, a processor that is not only decent at working for a living, it has game! The previous X3D chip was a darling amongst gamers and the Ryzen 7 9800X3D offers you even more.
The FPS Review saw at least a 10% performance increase when benchmarking games, often significantly more, and in almost every case the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is 20-40% better than the Core i9-14900K set to it’s best power configuration. That is well beyond the margin of error and could well be visible to you while gaming. Indeed it is often 10-10% faster than the previous Ryzen 9 7950X3D … and we haven’t even seen the Ryzen 9 X3D chip from this generation, assuming we get one that is. The chip also topped the charts in Sebastian’s testing.
There is one small point on the downside, the chip will cost you $30 more than last generation.
