A Drive Head And Shoulders Above The Competition, Literally
MSI’s Spatium M580 is a Phison based PCIe 5.0 SSD with Micron 232-layer 3D TLC NAND, 30% of it an SLC cache, and an 8GB DDR4-4266 cache, all of which is passively cooled. As you can see from the picture, passively cooling such a powerful SSD is a challenge. The cooler with it’s three heatpipes is essentially as tall as the NVMe drive is long, so it is not going to fit in the NVMe port hidden under your GPU. If you can fit it in however, TechPowerUp’s testing showed no evidence of thermal throttling, even after over 10 minutes of sustained writes.
The more impressive thing is how they managed to keep the Spatium M580 writing for 10 minutes, as they saw sequential writes of 12,556MB/s in CDM, not to mention over 14,000MB/s sequential reads. That is a speed matched by only a couple of the competitors SSDs, and they win by a fairly small percentage. When it finally shows up for sale you should expect similar pricing to the competitors such as the Crucial T705, just over $500 for the 4TB model.
