Excellent Value,
I handle computer issues at my job and have installed five HP-S2031 monitors before buying one for myself. I was planning on adding an additional monitor and found an in store offer of $99.95. Just as at work, the three pieces (the stand has two parts that snap together, which snap into the base) installed quickly and easily. Typical of most new monitors it has a very bright display. I have read a couple of reviews stating that text was blurry, but on mine, as well as the ones I’ve installed at work, with its recommended resolution of 1600×900 it is extremely sharp and clear both with word processing and other programs. There was a bit a blurriness when I initially connected it to my laptop which has a 1366×768 default resolution, but once corrected it was crystal clear, and I suspect that may have been the problem with the others. Also it’s worth mentioning that Windows 7 users have “ClearType Text Tuner” available which will sharpen text on any monitor, available by typing “Clear” in the Start menu and following your nose. The blue L.E.D. which my I found a bit irritating can be turned off as desired by going to MenuManagementBezel Power L.E.D. Additionally numerous other details are configurable, and “Information” will show the units unique and unchangeable serial number for insurance purposes. Overall I find the unit works exactly as advertised. It’s not a high end monitor, but for most purposes it will meet expectations with ease.

Excellent budget LCD monitor,
For years now, I’ve been wanting a second monitor to use in tandem with my primary 24-inch (1920 x 1200) Samsung SyncMaster T240 (which I’ve had for 3 years and also love). However, I could never quite get myself to justify the cost of having a second monitor. But recently, I was at my local Best Buy and saw this HP S2031 on sale for a hundred bucks. Now, I’ve seen a lot of monitors in that price range before, but all of the ones I saw had lower native resolutions and/or slower response times. When I spotted this one, which sported a 1600 x 900 resolution and a 5ms response time, I couldn’t resist. I’d never bought an HP monitor before, but for that price I decided to take the chance.
And I’m so glad I did. It’s nothing fancy. Just a basic LCD monitor, but it serves my purposes perfectly, as I just needed a second monitor to display my monitoring programs while playing games on my primary monitor. I also use it to browse the web while watching online videos on the other monitor. It also works great for browsing two web pages simultaneously. Viewing angles are good, but not excellent. Backlight bleedthrough is there (as it is on most LCDs), but it’s very minimal, and I can only notice it when I’m looking for it while the computer is booting up with a completely black screen. During actual use, it’s not evident at all.
First off, it was extremely easy to set up, and there were zero dead pixels out of the box. It also came with all cables needed to hook it up. Also, none of the cables are permanently attached to the monitor, so if a cable ever goes bad, you can simply replace the entire cable. I’ve owned a lot of monitors that have the video cable permanently attached to the back of the monitor, which means if that cable were to go bad, the whole monitor would then be useless. So having the cables all separate was a pleasant and unexpected surprise in a monitor this inexpensive. Cables included: Power cable, VGA cable, and DVI cable.
I’ve got both my monitors hooked to my GTX460 via DVI.
There is also a CD included, which contains the manual and drivers, but I didn’t need it, as Windows 7 installed drivers automatically.
For the price, I was not expecting a superb image from the S2031, but once again, I was pleasantly surprised. It came out of the box set at 90{b81fbfd19e1fca5890798868c0714c408bbd5ec471654b6f9630c0fffa6e7eb3} brightness, and it was indeed bright. As I previouly mentioned, there are no dead pixels. The colors are vivid, and most surprisingly, the text is extremely sharp. There are also a surprising amount of adjustments you can make through the monitor’s menu, including Custom Color, Contrast, Brightness, Image Control, OSD Control, Power Saver, Power-On Recall, Mode Display, Monitor Status, DDC/CI Support, Bezel Power LED (you can turn the front-panel power LED off if you wish–a very nice feature!), Sleep Timer, Language, Information, Factory Reset, and Source Control. Physical adjustments: You can adjust tilt, but not height.
In summary, this is the best monitor I’ve ever seen at the hundred dollar price point. And if I didn’t already have a very nice 24 inch primary monitor, I wouldn’t hesitate to use the HP S2031 as my primary monitor if I needed to. I’m impressed.

Sleek, Crisp and Clear,
I bought the monitor for Christmas. The set up was very easy. It’s a very sleek widescreen monitor. The color on it is bright and crisp. We have really enjoyed the sharp resolution of the screen when streaming movies or playing games. The screen doesn’t have speakers, for us that’s not an issue since we have a nice set that compliments the screen.
I would purchace this screen again. Great price and great quality.
