Here’s 20% Off A New Device We Will Abandon In A Few Years
It’s the third time D-Link has made the news recently, for abandoning old devices instead of patching serious vulnerabilities. This is indeed an official policy, as D-Link informed The Register that “Regardless of product type or US sales channel, D-Link’s general policy, when products reach EOS/EOL, they can no longer be supported, and all firmware development for these products cease,“.
The devices include two ancient models, the DSR-500N and DSR-1000N which hit EoL in 2015 as well as the DSR-150, DSR-150N, DSR-250 and DSR-250N which hit EoL just a few months ago. D-Link is not detailing what the vulnerabilities are, likely in the false hope attackers won’t figure them out and exploit them. Instead they are suggesting that owners immediately toss the listed models and replace them with new ones.
In an attempt to sugar coat this recommendation D-Link is offering 20% off their DSR-250v2 to those with one or more of the vulnerable router models, which they assure customers is not susceptible to the same attacks. Amusingly a search for the end of life date for that model does not come up with any results so it is hard to say exactly how long before the DSR-250v2 also becomes garbage. That is if you were willing to replace your D-Link device with another one of their products.
