AMD is preparing to lay off up to 30 percent of its workforce after warning investors late last week of a massive sales and earnings miss.
AMD has been urgently trying to better its financial affairs this year, stagnant sales of its Bulldozer and APU lines have been hampering its progress. While AMD has yet to officially comment on any restructuring, sources that spoke with AllThingsD and CNET said an announcement could come as early as this week.
While both AMD and Intel have struggled to adapt to the new realities of ARM-dominated tablet culture, AMD’s status as a second-tier processor company meant it was hit particularly hard during the decline in PC sales of the last three years.
Word of looming layoffs at AMD comes nearly a year after the company’s CEO, Rory Read, unveiled a restructuring plan that saw 10 percent of AMD’s staff laid off with a particular emphasis on management.
When the layoffs were announced technology analyst Jeff Kagan told Hardware Canucks it was foretelling of what is to come for the company.
“The AMD of the future will look nothing like the AMD of today,” Mr. Kagan said.
