I needed to replace a noisy case cooling fan in a JVC micro-HiFi system. I was worried about the fit of the new fan, which was not a problem, because the size, case and blade shape, and mounting holes’ positions of the Skythe fan were identical to the fan I was replacing.

However, I made an incorrect assumption that all 40mm x 40mm x 10mm fans would be absolutely the same, which is NOT the case. The differences are in RPM and CFM. Skythe fan is very quiet, but it also runs at 60{b81fbfd19e1fca5890798868c0714c408bbd5ec471654b6f9630c0fffa6e7eb3} RPM (3500 vs. 6000) and pushes 64{b81fbfd19e1fca5890798868c0714c408bbd5ec471654b6f9630c0fffa6e7eb3} CFM (4.1 vs. 6.4) of the original fan. I discovered this after I installed Skythe fan and could not tell whether it was running because it was not making any noise and the airflow out of the vent was practically undetectable. The JVC stereo turns the fan on and off as needed, and it was not running when I soldered it on. I had to put the case back together and play a CD twice and then take the case apart while the stereo was plugged in to see whether the fan was indeed running. It was, but very little air was being pushed by it.

I am going to replace it with a fan with specs that are closer to the original fan’s specs. I was looking at the Link Depot’s ball bearing 40mm x 10mm fan, but several users on newegg complained about the noise, so I have purchased a sleeve bearing ARX Ceradyne-A FD1240-A2012A from xsfans.

Overall, I think this is a good quiet fan, but make sure it suits your needs. If you are looking for more cooling than your current fan , this fan is probably not it.

I’m using this with an Intel GMA 950 graphics chipset on an Intel Mini-ITX Atom motherboard. First I ordered a 40x40x20 fan, but it was too big for the heat sink. This 40x40x10 fan fit perfectly. Other blogs recommended Scythe very highly. I can see why. It is very quiet, much quieter than the cheap fan that came with the motherboard.

It was hard to find a fan this size. Most blogs have them listed under Case Fans, rather than motherboard or GPU fans. This is a great quality quiet fan. I had to use the 2 to 3 pin adapter that came with it. If you aren’t sure, order a fan you can uses with both 2 and 3 pin connectors. My only complaint with this fan, is that it isn’t clear with UV LED lighting. You can’t really see the fan in my computer, but that would still make it more cool and geekier.

My northbridge fan failed with a horrible screeching noise.

This works great. A real 3-pin would be better — adapter works but you lose RPM sensing. Not a lot of choices at 10mm thick however.
