A Wording Change Indicates Microsoft Is Dropping Control Panel’s Retirement
Microsoft doesn’t listen to a lot of user feedback, either that or the people that they do listen to aren’t the ones they should be listening to. Not many of us wanted to have the same interface on our desktop computers as we do on our phones, evidenced by the utter extinction of the Windows phone. That hasn’t stopped Microsoft from continuing to change Windows to look more and more like a mobile app. They also have a lovely tendency to insert consumer type features into their Server products and to replicate unnecessary aesthetic choices from other OSes into Windows.
The critical threshold of negative feedback to catch Microsoft’s attention was reached with their recent announcement they were planning on retiring the Control Panel. Ars Technica noticed that the original wording in a post indicating Control Panel’s death has been modified to only mention that more Control Panel features will be included in the Settings app. As is tradition Microsoft have made no direct comments about the change, they simply changed the message.
This is not to say they won’t change their minds again, but for now one of our most important tools will not be shelved.
